Here Comes the Sun

As summer inches closer and closer and the sun is slowly but surely starting to make more of an appearance it is more important than ever to be aware that too much sun can be harmful. Ensuring you know signs to look for skin abnormalities that could potentially be cancerous.

Types of skin cancer:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma – Most common
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma – Less common but grows faster
  • Melanoma – Least common but the most dangerous

What to look for:

  • A = ASYMMETRY – when one half of the mole/mark doesn’t match the other
  • B = BORDER – when the borders are irregular, ragged, or blurred
  • C = COLOUR – when the colour varies throughout and is not uniform
  • D = DIAMETER – when the diameter is more than 6mm (but could be smaller)
  • E = EVOLVING – changes in the appearance or feel over variable time : weeks, months or years

Please seek professional medical advice if you suspect anything. It is better to get it checked than to wish you did.

  • Skin cancer is the 5th most common cancer in the UK, around 46 people a day get diagnosed with melanoma and this is the least common form.

  • 91.3% of people in England survive having melanoma for 5 years or more.

  • Using sunbeds before the age of 35 increases the risk of cancer by 59%.

  • 86% of melanoma cases in the UK are preventable."
